A house full of kids only means one thing: non stop cleaning. Whether its your living room, bedroom, washroom or kitchen, kids make sure they mess up every corner of the house. One of the most annoying stages of raising children up is bed wetting. Regardless of the fact whether you have potty trained your kids or not, this can happen to you any day of anytime.
If you’ve recently purchased a new mattress for your kids, last thing you want is pee stains on the mattress. Apart from stains, the mattress also smells bad when you or your kids sleep on it. Luckily, if you’ve gotten yourself into this problem, there are a few ways to readily remove the stain and pungent smell from using products at home.
How to Clean a Mattress and Get Rid of Urine Stains and Odor
- Use a dry cloth to soak up the excess urine still visible. Removing the moisture from the mattress should be the first step to cleaning a mattress that has been urinated on.
- Once that’s done, sprinkle baking soda on the urinated area. This helps absorb the moisture that has crept down.
- Now, using dishwashing liquid soap and water, mix a solution to spray on to the mattress. Leave this for a few minutes and clean with cold water.
- Sprinkle on the baking soda again and let it sit for the next few hours (4-5). This helps absorb any urine content left in the mattress.
- Wipe clean with a vacuum cleaner.
Another tested way to free your mattress from urine smell and stains is to use a hydrogen peroxide solution. Since it isn’t readily available at home, it should be an alternative to the previous method. Take a spray bottle and add hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish-washing soap and a few drops of essential oil. Sprinkle baking soda on to the mattress instead of adding it to the spray bottle as it can easily clog the pipes up, preventing the mixture from passing out of the bottle. Leaving the solution on for a few minutes will give magical results, making pee stains disappear like they were never there in the first place.
Adding in a few drops of essential oils in the cleaning solution helps you get rid of the disgusting smell which is there to stay, otherwise. Once your mattress is dried and cleaned, you are only going to enjoy sleeping in the fragrance essential oils leave behind. Another method to remove urine smell from the mattress is taking one part full strength vinegar and one part cold water and apply on the affected area. Blot with a dry cloth and leave it to dry. High strength vinegar helps in removing the stench.
Waterproof mattress protectors are probably the best way to prevent such incidents from happening. Whether its your pets or your kids you want to keep your mattress safe from, precaution is always better than cure.
Precautions
When you’re scrubbing the stains off after applying the solution on the mattress, it is important that you don’t rub it, since that only further spreads the stain, increasing the size of the mark it will leave. Similarly, do not soak the fabric or mattress cover in the cleaning solution, as it will spread the smell in the entire fabric.
Another thing you need to remember is that the mattress may take up to 7-8hrs to dry up completely. Therefore, it is advised that you do not sleep on it for the night and use another mattress for the time being.
